Portrait Poetry Series #7: What He Deserved

Portraits Series

He was sleeping . . .

quiet breaths

escaped his pursed lips

at times a smile was shared

and he dreamed

hands gripping the pillow tight

and mama’s quilt

wrapped around his waist

he was warm and happy

as it should be.

He knew not –

the color of his skin

nor what history laid before him

what dreams were shattered

before his first breaths

escaped his chest,

but hope lies within his heart

he is fed and warm

and loved

and someday –

though the path

has already been laid,

he will find another way.

Despite the obstacles,

despite the pain-

he will carry on

and forge new paths

for those behind him.

He will not listen

when he is told

to speak softly

in frightened tongue.

He will not listen

when he is told

to stand behind the man

for that is where he belongs.

No,

he shall rise up

and dream a dream

he shall rise up

and make it possible

to stand in front –

loud and proud

he shall stand

unwavering –

because he was fed

because he was warm

because he was loved

and because –

that was what he deserved.

Yes indeed. It crosses many borders for many different reasons. This is not the reason we were created for. So very sad – only difference is the color of our skin, the beauty of our language, the wonder of our differences. Sad, indeed!
