Daily Post Prompt: The Carefree Whisper, A Poem

on

I want to be

the carefree whisper

of the wind

on a winter’s morning.

Cold, gusty breaths,

frost upon the windowpane,

while children stare

glossy-eyed

at piles of snow

and imagine

building forts

throwing snowballs

sliding down hills.

I want to be the glee

within their throats

loud voiced and free

set sail upon the winds

of winter’s kiss

where frosty noses

rosy cheeks

the crunch of new fallen snow

settle beneath the beauty

of a winter’s morning.

I want to be

the warmth they seek

after merriment

mittens hung nearby

drops dripping

from snowsuits

dangling from hooks

a hot cup of cocoa

held carefully to their lips

marshmallows floating

the crackle of wood

succumbing to flame

where shadows dance

in the flickers of light.

The children stretch

the fireplace before them

their arms and feet

seek to revive

their stolen warmth.

I want to be

the carefree whisper

of the wind

on a winter’s morning

the glee within their throats

the warmth they seek

the solace of the moment

so that I may recite the ways

that winter holds beauty

tightly within her icy fingertips.
