Daily Post Prompt: We Bleed from the Same Wounds, A Poem

We are
in the middle of
a crisis
where men, women, and children
of darker skin
must fear their every move
where raised hands
and docile position
no longer mean
I am not a threat
for the threat lies
therein –
the skin draped
across their backs
and their story,
our story –
is not a collective one
for though the
same air fills their lungs
and the same blood
fills our veins
we are different
and the level
of the threat
only increases
the darker the hue.
I am a wearied dreamer,
for I thought
we had gotten past this
that things had
gotten better
but the veil that I
have closed over my eyes
has been pried right open.
All the struggle
that our land has known
all the innocent bloodshed
that mars our streets
our long, sad history
of racial divide
and still, we have
learned nothing?
We are
in the middle
of a crisis
and we can
no longer afford
to take these things
We need to realize
that we all bleed
from the same wounds.

  4. Excellent my dear poet!! It’s all totally wrong, so warped, and I feel situations contrived by certain people to put great fear among everyone throughout the world. We should all stand tall in our own corners of the world and say loudly “No, I don’t accept this, we are not going to go backwards – we’re going forwards”.

Thanks for sharing your feelings on this, it needs to be shouted from the rooftops…this as normal, there is no divide, we are not living it.

I totally agree Suzy. It is sad, but we are raising our voice (even in this manner) for we must at least say something. Hopefully if we raise our voices, others will join in. Things need to change, for we have learned for too long the destructiveness of drawing lines in the sand.
