Portraits Poetry Series #15: See Through the Eyes of a Child

Portraits Series

Have you ever noticed
the beauty
of a common leaf
the colors
as you walk by
on an Autumn’s day
the lines
the swirls
the ragged edges.
What beauty!
How is it that
we often overlook
the common charm
of all these things
only a child
would stoop
in wonder –
trace the lines
upon the leaf
stare in wonder
and dream.
Only a child
would lay
beneath the trees
and watch leaves sway
in the gentle breeze
and wonder what stories
do they tell.
What animals
have trespassed
these lines and ridges?
Where do they dwell?
What language
did they speak
and where
did their travels
take them?
Perhaps
we will never notice,
or,
stooped in old age
we may find ourselves
beneath the trees again
finding beauty,
right where we left it.
