Daily Post Prompt: The Obvious Beauty of Children, A Poem

Have you not witnessed

The obvious beauty of children

The low crouch

Where ladybugs crawl

Across dew tipped grasses

The silent gaze

On rippling water

A tricking stream –

They hear its lullaby

In the silence of leave-strewn pathways

They find amazement

In ants crawling

Across cracked pavement

They quietly listen

To the sounds of hummingbirds

The buzz of bees

The cricket’s serenade

In the evening

Everything is held

In tiny fingers

with reverence

Everything heard

With open ear

And open heart.

There is an innocence

about all of this

an open-eyed engagement

with everything they witness

and though small in stature,

they make up for it in their dreams.

They are the true witness

To the long, meaningful stretch of our days

And the beauty that we seek –

In life

In love

In the momentous task

Of finding meaning

For our next breath

Can only be found

In the unrestrained longing

Of a child’s inquisitive vision.
