Eyes that Pretend to Know Her Well, A Poem

She struggles against
The weight of the world
The expectation –
The waiting
For someone to notice
For someone to see
But she is left wanting
And alone.
She takes no comfort
There – in her reflection
For though she
Knows the story
Of furled brow
And her lost smile
She knows the purpose
Of each wrinkle and scar
Self-assured, and content
She knows her own story
But others only stare
And think they know.
They look with eyes
That condescend
That pretend to know her well
Sum up and define
For it is easy, isn’t it?
What makes that brow furl,
Could it be perhaps her choices?
Oh yes, we know
Unhappiness lay at her feet
For she strove to seek
Its weary ways
Yes, that must be it!
And yet, they shall never know
It is not her life that makes her unhappy
It is their reflection of her
That unsettles her heart
And though it touches her not
Nor changes her meaning,
Her heart fills with sadness
For their reflection of her
Can only portray
The reflection of
Their own hearts.

        1. Sorry I have been quiet lately, things have been busy but things in life tend to slow down at some point. Thank you so much for your comment, and I do hope to post much, much more 🙂
