Some of Us Must Continue to Walk Alone, A Poem

I have walked these paths before
On summer mornings
On winter evenings
In the warmth of the shining sun
And in the cold under a moonlit sky.
This is my path
My way home
But I have never had
To walk it alone.
I have counted the moments
Of your absence
Felt them along my veins
And the tears I have cried
Seem not enough –
But you shall never return.
Through loss,
I understand your permanence
In the silent moments,
You etched yourself upon my soul
And in the laughter, the smiles, and the tears
You have paraded the beauty of life at my feet.
“All this is for you,” you said.
And I loved you willingly and openly
But time proves a harsh passage
And some, must continue
To walk alone.
