Photography: Playing with Lights (Part #1)

I don’t exactly know why – but for some reason I am always drawn to seeing things differently.  I really enjoy being in that space, however – no matter that others don’t always understand what I see.  It’s just me.

The other day we went to the gardens late in the day and they are starting to do their show of lights each night.  We got a sneak preview – considering the sun goes down quite early now.  I am going to assume my husband thought I wouldn’t find much to photography – but I stumbled upon something that intrigued me.  First of all, you have the light of the sun going down and add to that lights on the trees, and my mishandling of the camera :-).  One misstep (yes, many of my favorite things start as mistakes) and I was hooked.

As always – I love to share what I have come up with (no matter how crazy you might think I am for doing this).  I guess I just like taking chances, but I find there is great beauty in taking that risk.  For me, I could probably stare at these images all day…

  1. Sumyanna, these are some gorgeous pictures! I love how you truly were seeing things differently. Just like you, I used to squint so that the lights would give this effect. Therefore, whenever a camera is trying to capture light but is out of focus, I simply love it. I am definitely going to make an effort to take pictures like these soon!

    1. Oh that is fabulous! Yes – what is funny is that an accident made me realize I could do this. Aren’t accidents just wonderful? Sometimes they lead you to the neatest things!

  2. I love how you see things. (to a great extent, that’s how lights appear to me every day. Still, it adds a special quality to christmas lights.) And I happen to love how you see things, it hints at what could be can be and moves beyond what is. You can’t go wrong with that!

    1. I actually remember being younger and squinting to see them this way. I just find the colors, the shadows, and the traces of trees so lovely. I could have stayed all day taking photos ☺

      1. I’m thrilled you shared, cause I love those pictures. It’s how I see due to my sight, but it makes Christmas Lights, indeed all lights prettier. I have always been drawn to these types of pictures.

        1. Has your sight always been like that or is it something you grew into? I only ask as even now I have started to need to wear glasses – it takes getting used to. To me, I find it beautiful but I am also sure it may be frustrating if you want to see it the way it is and you cannot. However – sometimes I have found that seeing things as they are is limiting, if that makes sense 🙂 So very glad you enjoyed these – I do have more 🙂

          1. Can’t wait to see more. I had a work place accident, this is my vision ever since surgery would have meant losing both eyes. And unfortunately getting worse. It is what it is, but it makes christmas pretty

          2. So sorry to hear that. I know it must not be easy – but I do agree, I love it when the lights look this way. It is a dazzling display 🙂
