We are All a Disillusioned Mess of Worrying Thoughts, A Poem

real

I often find myself lost

In the maddening silence

Of unspoken words

And forgotten kindness

The disquieting rush

To grasp

To grab

And to build walls

Of self-inflicted quarantine.

Yet somehow, we are alone

And we pride ourselves

On those empty spaces.

It almost seems

We are afraid to connect

And we loathe our need

To reach out

And scream our vulnerability.

What is it we fear

That we seek to hide

Our humanity

We crawl up in this space

Beneath our brains

And our thoughts whisper –

Play it safe!

What if…

We were to choose

To unravel our wounds

Instead of run?

What if…

We could realize

That what we can be

Is something more wonderful

If we only lost that fear

If we only chose not to tremble

In our naked thoughts,

But instead we welcomed

Who we are –

Littered with mistakes

And a solemn promise

To make many more.

Have we not seen them

Serve as a pathway

To who we could become?

I think, along the way

There has been a disconnect

Somewhere on the journey

We have been taught

To hide ourselves away

To learn to be

What they want you to be

To let them see

Only what you want them to see

And everything else?

Is tucked away

In the deepest corners

Of our thoughts

And we seek to convince ourselves

They do not matter,

Yet our hearts ache

In the loneliness of those lies

And our souls seek

To hear the sound

Of their own voices.

At night, we lay

Our disillusioned hearts to sleep

Smothered by thoughts

Of imperfections

And sometimes all we can do

Is dream the gentle breaths

Of being.

hiding in our crowded brains, cut deep by taught neuroses of our struggling souls. Yes it is difficult to get over the reflex to say and do nothing, but the more one lives in ones private foibles the harder it appears to be able to achieve anything to help our troubled society (I’m being blown away by Neil Young right now). This is another great poem by you, these weekly challenges, have really opened a wonderfully rich vain of creativity for you, and I am so pleased to be able to share in that by being able to read these great and thought provoking poems of yours. Best wishes and blessings, Charles.
