Daily Post Prompt: It’s Rather Quite Simple – Selfish Reasons

They did not speak

The same language,

But she could see

The sadness in

The woman’s eyes

Swollen – red

Lips quivering

How could she not

Say anything?

How could she

Just stand on by

Witness to the pain,

Yet indifferent?

The old woman’s

age-worn hands

Gripped her wheelchair,

But her eyes did not search

For a familiar smile

For she knew

She would not find it

And she continued

To cry

And others walked on by.

It tugged

At the young woman’s heart

And she felt her pain.

She could not

Let it go

Or walk away.

Finally, she got

The woman’s attention

And though she

Did not speak Spanish,

She mimicked a hug

And asked for permission.

She had hoped

It was not

Too much to ask.

A gentle nod

The woman gave

In her direction

And she leaned in close.

Now, the tears flowed

But thankful now

– for release.

For a while,

They stood this way

One woman old,

The other – young

An embrace among friends

Who’ve never met,

And when at last

They parted

The older woman

A grateful smile.

The young lady

How it feels

To be alone

To need a shoulder

To cry on

But she does this

Simple act

For purely

Selfish reasons

. . . she feels happiness

That even she

Can make

A difference,

No matter how small.
