My Country ‘Tis of Thee, A Poem

It is enough to remember
the path that got us here
history unwoven
in so many places,
looks just the same.
It matters not,
where or when –
beneath the work boots of power,
people are unjustly enslaved.
Do you want to see them
beg or cry out?
tear their hair in the streets?
Are you waiting
for their fading breath
as they die starving in the streets?
What has made America great
was always the struggle
toward improvement
the constant yearning to include
in our very definition –
every man, woman, and child
that walked upon this land
as essential as the air we breathe.
We sought freedom
and in our seeking –
we sought not to trespass
but to reap together
what we, so long ago
worked together for.
It is not – that we are perfect
nor that we are assured
our perfection
for we have fought hard
along the way
and the fight is still necessary,
but our strength and beauty
has only come –
from being just
and providing opportunity
for everyone
who calls this country home.

I certainly hope not. It is surprising to see that it was every successful in the first place. The America I know just wouldn’t stand for it. Thank you 🙂

  2. That’s beautiful. In order to praise it highly enough, I have to say that it reads like something Martin Luther may say in a speech, were he still alive.
