Soul Song, a poem

soulsong

Can you hear it?

It’s in the words

between the lines,

barely uttered.

It is there

rising from the page

full of meaning

crying out –

both reader and writer,

unaware,

but it is there.

It is in the rising melody

of hope

spun within a song

often overtaken,

overshadowed

by all the noise

but later, you notice

it repeats, it echoes

and your heart finally deciphers

the phrased lines

and remembers its meaning.

Shadows may have

grow long over your heart

but now, aware –

you rise and sing.

And as you are singing,

the sound becomes

the words to your own story.

  1. In love this!! It reads like a melody in my mind. Wonderfully penned. It reminded me the importance of art, stories, connectivity. It lit a fire under me – thank you for the inspiration 🙂

  2. Wow, Sumyanna, this poem really spoke to me, and I’m sure it will speak to many, I absolutely love it, and feel yes there is this melody inside that twists and turns and rises in hope, and you have born it out so well, so have decided I must re-blog this and share it with all my other followers, best wishes and blessings, Charles.

    1. Thank you. I haven’t been writing much lately as I have been working on an important project. However, at some point in time I feel I will burst unless I write 🙂 This was the product of that pent up need to sing. So glad you like it. Thank you so much for sharing!

      1. Pleasure, it has been well liked with 17 likes on my blog plus 4 on my facebook page, including the internationally known Serb poet Helena Santic-Isakov. It is a great poem, even if it was just an outflow of emotion.

          1. I met her in Yeoville Johannesburg, we became friends quickly, and I helped her translate some of her poetry into English, which I have put on the blog under the title of translations. She and her husband left Serbia just before the wars broke out. They wanted to get married but she was Serbian ( the family was originally Croatian) and he was from a gypsy family, and they were scorned in there own country, so came to South Africa to get married and start a new life. They applied to become citizens, and had 3 children out here, then the government repatriated them to Serbia, where they live on a farm, near the Romanian border. I visited them in Belgrade, and we did a poetry reading together, there were lots of people who came to listen. Best wishes and blessings, Charles.

          2. I think I remember you mentioning her before, but I could be wrong. Such amazing stories you have Charles. Really, just absolutely fascinating. Do you realize that? Just wow – I am awestruck. I just homeschool the kids and don’t get the opportunity to socialize as much because we are always beauty. Your life reads like a fascinating novel.

          3. It certainly has had lots of stories and chapters, sometimes I wonder if I were not dyslexic, and did not turn away from the men’s world would I have achieved more in this vain? or gone off in another direction altogether. Sometimes I am a bit hard on myself think perhaps I too had an agenda to all that I did, maybe I did it to fit in and to make friends and survive. But then again may I just did it out of the good of my heart, or some of each. Perhaps I should tell all the stories to help myself see what is what.

          4. Oh, never underestimate the impact you have made already. Life is a test – and we all have things to overcome. I cannot imagine that we would have our strengths were it not for the difficulties. I think it helps you realize the power of words. Any good done – even if for seemingly selfish reasons also usually has some good intent. There are many other ways those actions could have leaned, but you chose to do something for the benefit of others. In the end, I don’t doubt people are thankful.

          5. Yes I’m sure you are write, and thanks for that, I think it just shows the insecurities I live with, and am slowly overcoming: namely huge self doubt. Best wishes and blessings, Charles.

          6. No worries. Just know that even for those who seem “to have it all” also have insecurities. I guess it is just a part of life. I have found many Dyslexics – despite having difficulties and doubt, have the ability to really outshine those who have it easier. I am amazed at how my kids have coped and how their talents grow. Realize that about yourself. It shows (even if you don’t see it) – you have talent.

          7. Sorry to take so long to answer, I fell asleep while the computer was downloading emails, and only woke up min time to rush off to work. My wife Genevieve loves my work, and is pushing me to publish (certainly there is enough – I have several thousand poems to choose from; which makes the job rather daunting!) and I know she is right, but there are these little whispers … Which you are correct, in saying I should finds ways to stop these destructive negative thought patterns. Maybe I have to be more forgiving, but I don’t really hold grudges against anybody or anything, but think maybe deep down inside things are different, and it is here that I must work.

          8. I do hope you do publish at some point. I know – the number is rather astounding when you think of it! It is nice to revisit works you may have forgotten though or just overlook them again with a new eye 🙂 Don’t let those negative voices drown you out, they are nothing but nonsense…

          9. Yes it is one of the many things that I will make time for. Wish I could just stop the world for a month, and get things done… But am slowly changing my life around so that I can make the times.
