Portraits Poetry Series #48: Together in Silence

He reclines in his seat

beneath the shade of the porch.

He closes his eyes

and a silent smile

spreads across his lips.

He dwells in his dreams,

legs outstretched

and he finds comfort there

in the silence.

She sits at the table near him

stirring her tea

you can hear

little clinks against the glass

and she smiles.

She is poised carefully

near the edge of her chair

eyes dreamy,

and silently

she dwells in her dreams.

Gently caressed

by the warmth of the day,

they sit together,

lost in their own thoughts.

At day’s long end,

shadows fall carefully and slowly

across the darkened porch

and they sit there, these two

together dreaming

separate dreams,

but dreaming side by side.

For only those truly in love

can enjoy the silence,

without ever feeling the need

to say a word.
