For My Children, a poem

IfIHadMoreTime

If I had the money
and the time,
I would spend
every waking moment
with my children
yearning to see the world
through their eyes
and learning to adjust my view.
It is not enough –
these moments spent
for though they are already
now by my side,
we get caught up in the distractions
the daily “to dos”
that promise to separate us.
Though together,
we are often separate
prowling our own mysteries
and were it not
those expectations
I would love to lay
beneath the clouds
in spring time
and watch them together
crawl slowly across the sky.
I would love to watch
the ripples of stones thrown
across the water’s edge
the horizon, wavering
in a cool blue stream.
It is in
these hurried moments
when schoolwork calls
when homework piles high
that still, I savor
every moment spent,
but if I had the money
and the time,
I would hope I would learn
to savor them all the more.

What a lovely poem for your children. That is the struggle – to find as many of those moments as possible.

Thank you. It is hard to do, but I do feel I am fortunate enough to spend most of my time with them. Life just – always seems to demand focus though. I just always want to remind them how large a part they are of my happiness. I look forward to every morning walking out my bedroom door to see them rush to give me hugs 🙂

You’re welcome. Being a mom is a unique joy all its own!

  2. Lovely poem, Sumyanna. If you had more money and time though, these precious moments might not mean as much. I often feel the same though, work always gets in the way of the things we love most – we just have to balance it.

True Robbie. I would like to think having extra time would help. I have the wishes to do more. The problem is my other expectations. However, the more “free time” you have, the more “expectations.” As for the money, it would not matter much at all. I’m more about living in the moments we have. Thank you 🙂

  3. Too many things compete with the role of parenthood even though parents want to give their kids their “all” This is a really beautiful poem.
