It’s Sad that We Have a Day to Celebrate the Earth

Saw the March for Science today, so incredibly proud of all those who are willing to take a stand for what is important.  To me, it makes those bleaker days we have to go through a little easier to bear.  It is so encouraging to see how many people are more aware of their voices and their impact.  The world needs more of this.

This is a poem I had written last year for Earth Day and I felt it appropriate to share – as no one here has seen it 🙂  Enjoy!

EarthDay

Is it not sad
That Earth has a day
For fond remembrance
That our hearts
Have become
So complacent
For the beauty
That surrounds
Each woman and man
That we have to be told
On what day to celebrate it?
For what does
The summer sun
Say to the evening sky
When it is time for goodbye?
But it leaves its parting kiss
Rays stretched out
Across the horizon
It does not ignore
The passing tide
The rising mountain
The dangling leaf
But sheds its beauty
Everywhere
And it does this
Every day.
We have been led astray,
Dear Earth
For we turn our backs
On all your splendor
We ignore the signs
That every living being can see
And we relegate only one day
To remember thee.
