With Friends Like These, a poem

on

friends

She did not

Believe

Their thin excuses

The well-meant

Courtesies

Of “Hello darling!

My, how we’ve missed you!”

Yet never

Was it an

Opportune time

To be cordial afterward.

The words were flung

In the silence

Of passing moments

When etiquette requires

Something be spoken

But obviously

Never meant.

After all these years,

She wonders,

Truly,

Do they expect me

To believe

their simple words

and drown out

the maddening noise

of their conduct?

I would say I am glad that I am not alone… but it is a difficult thing, for sure. It is sad that people so easily cannot or will not see you.
