We Live in this Awkward Silence, a poem

We live

In this awkward silence

We order food,

We sometimes say hello,

But rarely do we

Bare our souls, unafraid.

Why is it

So hard to breathe?

We have become accustomed

To hiding our fears

They are as comfortable

As a warm blanket on our backs

And the world fervently seeks

The words

That we could speak –

The pain we could acknowledge,

The mistakes me have made,

The realization that we are one,

It longingly seeks

The melody of our hearts’ beating.

Yet, the essence of life itself

Dwindles out

Choking on one last mouthful

Of exasperated breath

Too tired to wait

And the world…

The world…

Is awash in the silence

Our distinctive crawl toward hope

Desiring realization

We all are necessary

Parts of a whole

Yet if we speak –

If we speak –

We are too afraid to speak

And we drown in our silence.

    1. Thank you Robbie… and so sorry I haven’t responded sooner. I’ve been taking a break away from all things electronic to enjoy the summer. The summer is not done, but I am back finally. Just enjoyed the lazier days of summer, unscripted and together. It was really nice. I hope winter is treating you well and that you and your family are well.

  1. Love this poem! I’ve been feeling like that lately! It’s hard for me to express myself sometimes I want to tell people how I really feel but I get so scared it makes it hard to connect with people.

    1. I know exactly what you mean. It is not easy, at all. I usually say what I feel (even if it is in writing) because I feel to carry the burden of not sharing myself is much harder than keeping quiet.
