My Damn Powerless Hands

Hands

It is hard

when you don’t know

where you are going.

And where

you have been,

is fading fast

for the ties that bind us –

barely lie past

the wounds we carry…

There has been loss

there is loss

there is more loss

than anyone can ever imagine

and though my heart still beats,

it is not the same.

What horrors

Have crossed my path

And what pangs of hunger

Suffering and mistreatment

Has my child had to witness?

My hands to hold

The only things left –

To help him feel safe

In a world that cares not

Our fate,

And even there –

I am powerless.

The sun may rise tomorrow

for some,

hovering in all her beauty

above the horizon

I’ve seen such beauty once,

but I can no longer bear to see it.

For everything I have lost –

I once held

in my two hands

and their emptiness shatters

the silence of my days.

Were I to mourn?

Who would listen?

Were I to cry out injustice

Who would speak for me?

I am but a lone voice

In a wilderness

That has been given

Me no chance

To right the wrongs

That I have borne.

Go back, they say

Yet where shall I turn to?

My weary child

Begs for safety

And though I am capable,

I have been prevented

From giving him a home.

And though I have travelled miles

Through sweat, hardship and tears

There is nothing left to fight for

As they carry my child away,

Arms flailing,

Crying out my name –

And my powerless hands

My damn powerless hands

Can do nothing.

A similar poem was written by me in 2016 about Syrian refugees.  The story keeps being retold, and nothing has been learned.  Incredibly sad time we live in.

  1. Sad indeed, it seems that we never do actually learn, if we did learn, there would not be such a prominent place in the world for people like \President Trump.Perhaps the point of a Trump figure is make ourselves look at our selves and realise just how terrible our world has become, and how little we appear to care about it. Great to have you back, and what a wonderful poem.

    1. I sometimes think we have to go through great pains to actually wake up and see where we have gone wrong. Sadly though, the progress we make never seems to make up for the huge backward steps we make in the process. What is sad is that people still have not realized the importance of raising children properly… to the point of keeping them from growing up to harm others.

      1. I think you have got it right, I think we certainly do not do well at bringing up children and fostering love and goodness for all, despite all the thousands of books written on child raising. I think schools and the schooling systems used today do not do anything to foster this either.

          1. It seems that the more education and child rearing changes, the further away from humanity’s needs it all goes, so that everything is geared to wards producing perfect students to fit into the economy, rather than into the peaceful and loving future of the world.

          2. I do believe this as well – but I would also say reading. Reading is so important for people to open their minds and realize there is a whole world out there with differing opinions and different points of view. The more we read, the more we realize how human we all are.

          3. I also believe reading to be very important, not only does it help in the way you have said, but it also strengthens and broardens ones imagination, which helps in being able to see things from different perspecties, and to accept change more easily.

    1. Yes, indeed we do. It is never easy… but without us trying, we would all lose out. So glad to see you and my, your picture is so lovely! So nice to see your smile 🙂

  2. There is only person in the world you can change; she owns the face you see in the mirror. Treat her and everyone around her with kindness and love.
