Take Ten Poetry Prompt: Words

Quite some time ago, I used to write for poetry prompts… namely, I would choose ten random words and write a poem with them.  It may sound a strange endeavor, but I found that a lot of my poems took me places I would not normally have gone… mostly due in part, because part of the story was already there in the chosen words.  I actually found that I enjoyed writing this way and the poems would often become my favorites.

I usually use a random word list generator to gather the words.  Here’s the current list:

I haven’t done it in some time, but I guess today is just as good as the next to start.  You may feel free to join in, I might add.  I have had people in the past write for the same word list and they enjoyed it.  Essentially, feel to write whatever you want… poetry, prose, a short story.  Also, you do not have to use all of the words, but I often find it a good challenge.  If a word (in its current form) does not completely work for you (you can make fear work, but not fearful) by all means… know that it’s okay to be a bit flexible.  Let me know if you do decide to take on the challenge – as I would be happy to share a link here.

Either way, here’s the poem I have written based on this prompt:

What is the hook, really?

the one that

holds our interest,

but trite, misplaced formalities.

Have they not yet

worn their way to waste?

You have to ask,

What is real, anymore?

For we walk the lonely streets

Hiding our own innate beauty

Behind a stone forged mask

Sweeping away any untidy truths

And yet we breathe –

We all breathe the same

Still we all fail to see each others’ humanity.

The knowledgeable speak

Of friendship, mercy, and peace

Yet, out of self-concern

They fade as mere words

Uttered by fearful lips

Their significance has lost its bite.

This is commendable! I cannot believe how beautifully you have drawn up a narrative out of such random words 🙂

Thank you again. I sometimes think choosing random words makes me try harder 🙂

Great job of working in your take 10 list. I would join in but I am so far behind on posts already… maybe next time I will be more caught up.

No worries Leigha. I always do these by myself for a challenge, but love to at least let others join in if they want to or have the time. So glad you are so busy though with the posts… that is a good thing! Hope you are still enjoying summer. I have finally found the peacefulness I was seeking.

Thank you for the encouragement. I hope you are doing well and the summer is enjoyable. Here, it is rather hot… but we are still going to get out there and photograph some flowers!
