In this world of ours,
we’ve created
a dilemma,
for we live
our lives
behind flashing screens
where everything
seems –
SO REAL
and yet everything
seems –
UNREALISTIC.
Sometimes,
we are brave enough
to take chances.
Reaching out,
we slowly
learn to trust
but just as quickly
we reel it in –
feigning distrust.
Yet where,
in truth,
can a heart
find certainty
if not in the words
of a heart
truly spoken?
Yet somehow,
we insist –
that truth
lays before us
only in what
we physically witness.
We dismiss –
the silent glances,
the words unspoken,
and the lies expressed
in our own presence.
No, in truth –
we tell ourselves
only lies are told
here,
online –
where people seek
to share their hearts
and all their
scars
and joys
and struggles
are free for the world to see.
It is here,
where we try
to whisper –
Do you see?
You are just like me.
Yet we pale
at the thought
of anyone’s significance.
Because none of this
is honest.
Instead, you
pull out the phone,
post pictures on Instagram
and convince yourself
that
NOTHING ELSE
is real.
Even though
you keep trying
to convince the world
that you are authentic.
I guess
you must be
the only one.

As the Skin Horse knows (and would tell you if you asked), Real is when somebody loves you…

Not love so much as friendship, which makes this story rather odd. But truthfully, is there much of a difference when we care for friends?
I just feel that people sometimes around you – you don’t really know them and they don’t really know you. I guess it’s not always the case, but sometimes it is. You are foreign to them in many ways – different interests, different ways of doing things, etc. For example, you may be a photographer and they don’t care at all in the world about photography – so you never talk about it. With my writing and perhaps even my photography – I feel that I share two of the things that mean the most to me in the world. Most people I have known don’t share those same interests at all. So here, I share myself in ways that is a lot less easy in person with people who are often not on the same wavelength. So yes, it hurts when someone sees that part of you and still assumes that you’re not real. I don’t know how more real a person could get.
