I always wanted to be a writer, I think
way back to that time
that mother bought me a typewriter.
I was only six or seven,
but I wanted to write
and in my own precocious way
I pulled out a plain sheet of paper
slid it through the carriage
and wrote my first words
begging Mr. Smith
to allow my daughter
be excused from recess.
It was not a lie, I thought
but a story filled with not so truths
for I wanted to stay indoors
protected from the cold
huddled near the windows
watching the other children play.
It was not, that I
intended to do wrong,
but only that I realized
I had a voice –
even if Mr. Smith
and my parents
disapproved.

What a fun poem. I recall using my Mom’s typewriter as a young kid, but I only typed gibberish to try to match the speed in which my Mom could type…LOL

Sometimes prompts take out the more personal aspects. I don’t mind it. I think all of our histories are unique and worth writing about 🙂 I was an early reader and writer. The letter (I’ve been told) was rather legible and the school actually had to call my mother to ask her if she typed the letter or not. Oh, those were the days!

Thank you very much Linda. I truly appreciate that. I guess it comes from writing a lot of fiction when I was younger. I would still do it, but things are too busy. Someday… 🙂
